final fantasy vii remake
barret/cloud.
i could gush for always and forever about how giddy i was with ffviir and how sweetly it expanded on barret's character. not that i mind if anything from the original game or spinoffs is brought in, but i adore the bond these two developed in remake especially. the almost "idiot and idiot" moments they have like when paired up in shinra's...weird jenova basement and start kicking and whacking at a heavy metal door because it's locked and what else are you supposed to do. their antics with this very sweetly burgeoning friendship just gets me.
just a note, but i am unfamiliar with intergrade. i keep hoping to get a ps5...and that keeps not happening, so i haven't touched it yet! so any references to that would fly completely over my head. feel free to go ham on potential events post-part 1 of remake, though. who the hell knows about what part 2 is gonna be like in regards to divergences from the original plot? this is one pair where i do really enjoy lighthearted hijinks, so get indulgently tropey! why shouldn't cloud crossdress again? why shouldn't barret have to wear that wonderful sailor uniform? why shouldn't they have to do it while fake dating in the golden saucer?
more serious takes on them are equally welcome, of course! cloud's hallucinations are pretty jarring in remake and rendered all that weightier by the whole "hey, cloud, i'm alt-dimension sephiroth here to fuck around and find out. (＾▽＾)" there's absolutely angst to be mined from these fucky visions, cloud's generally fucky brain state, and the course of destiny actively rebelling against them. i was extremely into remake's metanarrative, so that's something i'd love to see leaned into, as well!
(an aside: if you can include tifa in any capacity, i'd be thrilled. i love tifa and her relationships with both cloud and barret!)
final fantasy viii
squall/laguna.
this is conceptually such an amusing pairing to me. the extreme opposites in personality thrown in alongside "surprise! the loser whose brain you've been possessing in the past was your dad!" and...man, just laguna being laguna tbh. love him, but i don't think i'll ever get over him limping away from a hot pianist who then is still into him and hangs out for an evening where he rambles about journalism and random shit. what an icon. that's the kind of train-wreck romance i want for his son. with him. who is his dad.
yeah.
i think i prefer this more as an alternative canon au or with the addition of hanahaki disease or even a soulmate-esque au over a post-canon setting. post-canon with them isn't terribly interesting to me, but i'm definitely open to it if you feel strongly in that direction! hanahaki disease or a soulmate au are incredibly funny and enticing to me for during the canon plot because you get all that drama and "so, yeah, that loser that somehow became president of the most technologically advanced civilization in the world? he's not just like someone you're into against all odds. he's your dad." because i do want the biological relation to remain. that's a key ingredient in the ship for me. mess around with the canon plot, though! up the timey-wimey time travel nonsense and don't sweat the details too hard if you want to fuck around with anything there! i'm very into it.
to reiterate from my generalized likes, i absolutely don't mind canon relationships still being a thing. keep squall and rinoa hooked up before this obliterates their happily ever after. milk it for the delicious angst. just treat her kindly and in character is all i ask!
stranger of paradise: final fantasy origin
astos/jack.
trying to organize my feelings on these two or jack in general or just this damn game in general is sort of me just gesticulating wildly and with great emotion. i had a feeling sop would appeal to me, but still, it goes so very hard with its story and jack's character towards the end. did i think i would cry at the silly chaos meme game? not particularly. but did i cry at the silly chaos meme game? i most certainly did.
and a big part of that was jack and astos. the belated realization that astos was the author of all the fool's missives sort of killed me. ("heart is what defines my jack, and i will put my faith in that" lives rent free in my head.) the dedication astos had to jack even after jack forgot him again and again and again, after he had regain jack's trust in him again and again and again, after he had to explain this entire scheme to jack again and again and again--it's heartbreaking and gorgeous and i love, love, love it so much. you really don't think from the start when jack brusquely cuts off neon in the chaos shrine to play limp bizkit that neon's initial motivation of becoming chaos herself to inspire hope would be both the beginning and end to jack's character. what an endearing twist to make him not an asshole; he's just just an intense, grumpy, and awkward man that feels some kind of compulsion to act and cares deeply.
i love them. i love them so much. and as tragic as the game can be, i somehow crave even more tragedy. how many loops did astos live through where his dear, dear friend failed to recognize him? there's clear pain in his desire to be recalled by jack in that final loop before their scheme does succeed. who's to blame poor astos if he loses it in momentary despair in a doomed loop and takes that out on jack, who either can't recall or only half-recalls astos?
much as i love angst, though, stranger of paradise is also a plain cute game at points. (i can't believe my angry, chaos-slaying jack garland is this cute!) sop bleeds sincerity, so i'd also be delighted to receive something that plays around with that awkward-but-earnest energy. use that jack who is all blunt words but can manage a stilted apology to his comrade because no, it's not that you're not helpful--he's just...like that? jack's a pure delight no matter the situation you put him in.
